Squid Games are all the rage right now on Netflix, which seems to be all the talk these days. Christmas, gingerbread, chocolate, and Squid Game all rolled into one! No sugary candy, but a delicious gingerbread iced with real chocolate! Yes, real chocolate! This might take some effort to prepare or make, but the end result is satisfying. Give these "Squid Game Inspired Christmas Gingerbread Cookies" a try and enjoy them with your loved one.

Ingredients (For the cookies):

  • 3 Cups All Purpose Flour
  • 1 Teaspoon Ground Ginger
  • 2 Teaspoons Cinnamon Powder
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Nutmeg Powder
  • 1/8 Teaspoon Allspice
  • 1 Teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
  • 3/4 Cup Brown Sugar (firmly packed)
  • 1/4 Cup Molasses
  • 3/4 Cup Butter (unsalted,room temperature)
  • 1.5 Teaspoons Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Large Egg

Instructions:

  1. Combine flour, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Whisk them together until combined. Set aside.
  3. In a stand mixing bowl, add butter and brown sugar. Cream them until light at medium speed with a paddle attachment.
  4. Scrape down the sides and bottom once in a while in the process.
  5. Add the egg, molasses, vanilla extract and mix until just well combined. Make sure to scrape down the sides and bottom.
  6. At low speed (I used between "stir" and "#1"), gradually add the flour mixture into the stand mixer bowl and mix until well combined.
  7. Remove the dough from the mixing bowl and keep the dough in a ziplock bag or airtight container in the fridge overnight.
  8. On the day of baking, take the dough out of the fridge. Divide the dough into two.
  9. Transfer half of the dough to your work area and keep the other half back in the fridge until you are ready to use it.
  10. Preheat the oven to 340 degrees F.
  11. Lightly dust your work surface with some flour and your rolling pin.
  12. Roll the dough to your desired thickness.
  13. Cut the dough with the "Squid Game" theme cookie cutter set.
  14. Make a few round cookies using a round cookie cutter.
  15. Make a few icons on the surface of the cut-out round cookies.
  16. Using the umbrella, triangle, or circle icon cutter, gently press the icon cookie cutter on the cookies as shown. Make a few of these icons and set them aside on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or baking silicone mat. For this, we don’t need to ice them with chocolate, just plain will do.
  17. Using a rectangle cookie cutter or just cutting out rectangle shapes with a silicone knife, cut out a few of these shapes and set them aside on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or baking silicone mat. This one is for the coffin.
  18. Using a gingerbread man cookie cutter, cut out a few gingerbread men, and these will represent the soldiers. Transfer them to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or baking silicone mat. Set aside.
  19. Bake the cookies at 320 degrees F for 12 minutes, or until the edges and bottom of the cookies are lightly brown and set. **All ovens work differently, so please adjust the temperature and time accordingly. Add extra minutes if needed.
  20. Take the cookies out of the oven and let them sit on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.
  21. After 5 minutes, gently remove the cookies to the cooling rack to cool completely. Freshly baked cookies are soft, so please handle them gently.
  22. We are going to ice the cookies with melted chocolate according to the theme lists above. Do not decorate the cookies with melted chocolate before they have cooled completely.
  23. Alternatively you can use royal icing instead of chocolate, your choice.
  24. Prepare to melt and temper the chocolate. Refer to the instructions below for decorating.

Ingredients (Enough chocolates or candy melts to decorate the cookies):

For the soldiers:

For the coffins & ribbons:

Instructions:

  1. Melt and temper the chocolates and work with one color at a time for the decorations and tint them with oil-based or powder color according to the lists above. This prevents the chocolate from hardening. So please work with one color or theme at a time. Set aside.
  2. To add coloring to white chocolate: If using powdered, add powdered coloring as soon as the white chocolate starts to melt. If using oil based, add oil-based coloring after the chocolate melts, as long as you warm it up before using it. If using colored cocoa butter, add them in melted white chocolate and stir to mix.
  3. Fill the melted and tempered chocolate into a piping bag. One color for each bag.
  4. Pipe the chocolates according to the lists: soldiers, coffins, and ribbons. Ribbon can be made ahead of time in a chocolate mold and set aside to dry.
  5. If you are using candy melts, follow the melting instructions on the packaging.
  6. Decorate and pipe the melted chocolate on the gingerbread cookies according to the lists above (soldiers, coffins, and ribbons for coffins).
  7. Allow the chocolate to completely harden before storing or stacking it in an airtight container. Well-tempered chocolate can stay at room temperature and won't melt.

Tips & Notes:

  1. We used chocolate callets to decorate the theme but you are welcome to use Wilton Candy Melts if you prefer. Read the instructions behind the packaging on how to melt the candy melts. If you use chocolate callets or couverture chocolate, you need to temper them before using and tint them according to the colors theme. A chocolate that is perfectly tempered will set within three to five minutes at room temperature, leaving no streaks.
  2. When coloring chocolate, always use oil-based or powder-based coloring. Do not add water-based coloring. It will cause the chocolate to seize. Another alternative is coloured cocoa butter. They come in multiple colors and you can add/tint them in white chocolate.
  3. If you want to enjoy real chocolate and cookies at the same time, decorate them with tempered chocolate. If you want a quick version, you can use candy melts. However, please note that candy melts are not real chocolate.
  4. Another option is royal icing. We wanted chocolate in the cookies, so we used couverture chocolate for this recipe. Please feel free to use any method you like. These steps are not set in stone.
  5. Please keep in mind that the temperature setting and time recommendations above are based on our oven. All ovens work differently. Please adjust the temperature setting of your oven accordingly.
  6. You can make some of the chocolate, for instance, the ribbons for the coffin ahead of time in a chocolate mold.
  7. All the decorating ideas and methods listed above are just suggestions and what we did. Feel free to adjust according to your creativity or whichever method you prefer to use. We believe everyone has their own ways of doing things, as well as cooking and baking. So please feel free to adjust.
