Spicy Thai Basil Fried Rice
(Vegetarian Option Included)
This fragrant, flavorful and delicious Spicy Thai Basil Fried Rice is easy and simple to make. The main star in this recipe is the Thai Basil because this basil is different from the regular basil. This Thai Basil gives a very delicious and fragrant flavor to the rice at the end. Substitute the meat and use your choice of protein for the vegetarian or even make it a vegan option. If you like fried rice and spicy food, this Spicy Thai Basil Fried Rice is for you.
Ingredients (Serving one):
- Chicken Marinade Ingredients-
- 1/8 Cup Diced Chicken Breast/1 Chicken Thigh-cut into bite size (For vegetarian option, use fried tofu or vegetables of your choice)
- 1/2 Teaspoon Light Soy Sauce
- 1/4 Teaspoon Fish Sauce(For vegetarian option, omit this)
- 1/8 Teaspoon White Pepper
Other Ingredients For Frying:
- 1-2 Cloves Fresh Garlic
- 2 Bird Eyes Chilies
- 1 Bunch Fresh Thai Basil
- 1 Cup Cooked Overnight Rice
- 1 Tablespoon Light Soy Sauce
- 1/2 Tablespoon Dark Soy Sauce
- 1/4 Tablespoon Oyster Sauce (For vegetarian option, use vegetarian oyster sauce or omit this)
- Salt to taste (optional)
- 1/2-1 Tablespoon Grapeseed Cooking Oil (or your choice of oil)
Instructions
- Add light soy sauce, fish sauce and white pepper to the diced or cubed chicken breast. Set it aside.
- Rinse basil leaves and remove them from the stem, set aside.
- Remove seeds from the bird's eyes chillies.
- Remove the skin from the fresh garlic cloves.
- Add bird's eye chillies and garlic cloves into a mortar & pestle and pound them into a rough paste, set it aside. Alternatively, you can roughly chop them up.
- Heat up the grapeseed oil in a skillet, pan or wok over medium heat. Add pounded garlic and chillies and stir fry until aromatic.
- Add in the chicken and continue to stir fry for 2-3 minutes before adding in the rice.
- Turn up the heat to medium high and add in the rice.
- Stir fry to combine everything up for a minute or two.
- Add oyster sauce, dark soy sauce, light soy sauce and stir to mix for 3 minutes-5 minutes.
- Taste test to see if you need some salt. Otherwise, proceed to step 12.
- Add in basil leaves and stir to combine for a minute.
- Turn off the heat and transfer them to a serving plate.
- Garnish with more basil leaves (optional).

Tips & Notes
- Use Italian basil if Thai Basil is unavailable.
- Salt is optional because of the soy sauce and fish sauce in the recipe. So please adjust accordingly to your taste buds.
- Double or triple the amount of rice and ingredients for the recipe if you are making a big batch or serving more than one.
- Skip the fish sauce if you are not a fan of it.
- The recipe comes with a vegetarian option. Omit oyster sauce or use vegetarian oyster sauce, omit fish sauce & chicken and replace them with your choice of vegetables or use tofu as protein. If you use tofu, lightly pan fry the tofu first before adding it into the rice.
- You can use any type of cooking oil of your choice.
- I used Jasmine long grain rice, but feel free to use your favorite kind.
