Steamed Pork Shu Mai

When it comes to famous snacks on dim sum menu, the classic Shu Mai or steamed pork dumpling is what you are looking for. You can have it for lunch, dinner or even as a snack. Shu Mai is our all time favourite snack that can be made ahead of time. If you like dim sum, do give this delicious recipe a try. Homemade Shu Mai is always the best.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Lean Ground Pork
  • ¼ Teaspoon Pepper
  • ¼ Teaspoon Oyster Sauce
  • ½ Teaspoon Light Soy Sauce
  • 1.5 Teaspoon Salt (+/- adjust to taste)
  • 1/8 Teaspoon Garlic Powder(optional)
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Chinese Cooking Wine or Dry Sherry (optional)
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Sesame Oil
  • Wonton wrappers
  • 1/8 cup roughly chopped carrots (extra for garnishing - optional)
  • 1/8 cup roughly chopped fresh water chestnuts

Instructions

  1. Prepare ground pork in a bowl.
  2. Add pepper, oyster sauce, salt, garlic powder, light soy sauce, Chinese cooking wine and sesame oil. Mix to combine.
  3. Add chopped water chestnuts and chopped carrots. Mix to combine.
  4. Marinate it for at least 2 hours preferably overnight in the fridge.
  5. Prepare wonton wrappers.
  6. Take a piece of wonton wrapper and with a butter knife or chopsticks, scoop roughly a tablespoon or two of the filling to the centre of the wonton wrapper.
  7. Gently squeeze with your thumb and index finger to fold the edges(watch the video demo here).
  8. Flatten the top with butter knife and garnish with chopped carrots (optional).
  9. Repeat the process from number 6 to 8.
  10. Prepare the steamer & bring the water to a boil.
  11. Place the Shu Mai on a steamer lined with parchment paper and steam over medium high heat for 15-20 minutes or until the meat is cooked through.
  12. Serve the Pork Shu Mai with dipping sauce of your choice.

Tips & Notes

  1. Cover the wonton wrappers with a wet cloth/towel to prevent them from drying out while you wrap the Shu Mai.
  2. You can substitute with ground chicken or turkey for this recipe.
  3. Omit Chinese cooking wine in the recipe if you can’t take alcohol.
  4. Alternatively you can use canned water chestnuts. Either one is fine.
  5. Adjust salt according to your taste buds.
